Christmas Prelude in Coastal Kennebunkport: A Guide to Maine’s Most Charming Holiday Festival
Kennebunkport’s Christmas Prelude is one of my favorite holiday traditions—a true hallmark of the season and often ranked as one of the best holiday events in New England. The charming streets and festive decorations feel like stepping into a Hallmark movie. While it does get busy (hotel and dinner reservations often book up nearly a year in advance), it’s still possible to enjoy the magic even if you’re planning a day trip.
Located only about an hour from Newburyport and an hour and a half from Boston, Kennebunkport makes for an easy and festive day trip, whether you’re bringing the kids or making it an adults-only outing.
If I were heading there for the day, here’s how I’d make the most of it:
Morning ☕️
Start your day at a the insta-worthy Boulangerie. Grab a coffee and a freshly baked pastry to fuel up for the festive day ahead. Located in downtown Kennebunk (not Kennebunkport) it is a bit out of town center but worth exploring around there too.
Shops at Morning Walk: Stroll through the New England style shanti shops located in the Lower Village
Visit Sugar Bush Farm: Just down the road, stop at this charming spot for some holiday cheer and perhaps a gift or two.
Midday ☀️
Park in Dock Square: Arrive in the heart of Kennebunkport to explore the central hub of activity during the Christmas Prelude.
Lunch at The Boathouse: Put your name in for a table and explore the area while you wait. The Boathouse offers a scenic, festive atmosphere and delicious food.
Shop Around Port Square: Stop by Daytrip Society and Daytrip Jr. for whimsical gifts, and indulge your sweet tooth at The Candy Man.
Visit the Kennebunkport Inn: Check out the outdoor firepits or the cozy interiors of The Burleigh. Even if you don’t stay, the inn’s holiday decorations are worth a peek.
Evening 🎄
Tree Lighting in Dock Square @ 5:30pm: Experience the magic of the season at the tree lighting ceremony—a hallmark of the Christmas Prelude.
Walk to Batson River Brewing & Distilling: Watch them roast chestnuts on an open fire and enjoy the warm, festive atmosphere.
Enjoy a nice dinner before heading back. I love the Wandby Landing for a cozy and intimate setting. Or, Alison’s for a causal, local favorite.
